..to be a Pilgrim
As Plymouth businesses start doing their bit to help Make a Difference for Mayflower 400, members of the public are being offered a very special opportunity to get involved with the commemorations in 2020.
One Small Candle, Plymouth’s unique community pilgrim project is looking for five volunteer pilgrims.
Volunteers will be involved in putting together a special tourist trail starting from the Mayflower steps. Working in partnership with the Barbican Theatre they will help breathe life into the story of the sailing of the Mayflower for everyone to enjoy.
Pilgrim lookalikes will also be required to attend several exciting community events each year including Thanksgiving and the Illuminate Parade. By 2017 the pilgrim group hopes to grow to ten volunteers. Both men and women are needed. Could it be you donning the breeches and smock?
David Saunders is the lead pilgrim and said: “Being a pilgrim is such a wonderful experience, you meet so many amazing people. It is great to be involved in the 2020 celebrations.”
Plymouth’s pilgrim project is funded by the Heritage lottery fund and supported by Vital Sparks. Vital Sparks is a city-wide initiative, led by Plymouth City Council and supported by Arts Council England, designed to inspire arts, culture and creativity. The project offers small bursaries from £500 to £5,000 to community, youth and residents groups to make a difference in their neighbourhood.
One Small Candle is working in partnership with Lipson Cooperative Academy to create costumes. Currently the project needs white sheets, blankets and leather to be upcycled into pilgrim outfits.
